Why hire a postpartum doula? Because recovering from birth is hard!

Years ago, when a baby was born, the elders and relatives in the community rallied around the new parent and provided support to ease the family’s recovery. Over the years, our culture shifted. Today we no longer have the benefit of a village of wise folks to rely on for support.

When a new baby is brought earthside, there are so many unknowns – what do I do if the baby won’t stop crying? How do I ease a gassy tummy? When am I supposed to find time to shower or get a full night’s rest? Postpartum doulas bring this long-forgotten sense of community support to you.

What services does a postpartum doula provide?

Some of the most valued services we provide during a postpartum shift include soothing and feeding baby, meal prep, light tidying of the kitchen and loving interaction with baby while you take your first hot shower in days or take a nap after a sleepless night. We support you as the birthing person and make sure your specific needs are met, helping you navigate new parenthood and all that comes with it emotionally and physically—whether you require solution-oriented action or a compassionate listening ear and encouraging words. Our ultimate goal is to “work ourselves out of a job” by serving families in their most vulnerable time and leaving them feeling empowered, confident and strong in their new role.

Holding space for you

For some people, the usual hormonal baby blues can shift into postpartum depression. Postpartum doulas are trained to recognize these signs and symptoms and refer out to a trusted maternal mental-health provider. We hold space, check in regularly with you, and always have a list of references handy should you need physical or emotional help that is outside of our scope of practice.
