If Breastfeeding is “Natural,” Why Take a Class?

This (very logical) question comes up a lot. Babies have been feeding at the breast since the dawn of time; for thousands of years, it was the *only* way for them to feed. But that doesn’t mean it always comes naturally and easily to newborns or new parents.

Roadblocks to Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is nutritionally perfect for babies, but modern medicine poses several roadblocks to making it work from the start. Well-intentioned labor and delivery protocols can make it hard for newborns to initiate breastfeeding. Lack of breastfeeding expertise and support in many hospital settings means parents don’t always get help during those crucial first days. And breastfeeding is not the norm in our culture. Consequently, parents often lack the peer support and tools to establish and succeed at nursing.

Why take a lactation class?

Taking a lactation class *before* birth can help parents prepare for nursing with flexibility and confidence, and get off to a strong start. Being aware of potential challenges and red flags ahead of time gives parents the tools and resources to identify issues and address them early on. The sooner a breastfeeding challenge is addressed, the easier it usually is to fix.

Lactation Basics

Our 3-hour Lactation Basics class covers the whys and hows of latch, positioning and frequency, taking a nonjudgmental approach to this sometimes complex relationship. You’ll get hands-on instruction, practice with a doll for positioning, view optimal latching on videos and engage in lively discussion. Partners are encouraged to attend but not required. If you have any questions or challenges after your baby begins nursing, we offer FREE unlimited support by text, phone or video chat.

Whether your goal is exclusively breastfeeding or a combination of formula, pumping and breastfeeding, we’ll make sure you have what you need to meet your infant feeding goals!
